Greenland Adventure by Sea, Land & Air on the Ultramarine

Countries
Best time to visit
July, August

The ultimate Greenland experience, a full week exploring the Arctic on the world’s most advanced polar cruise vessel. The Ultramarine will immerse you in Greenland from the sea, land and air. No other ship offers such a variety of activities and such a personalised itinerary.

As you travel around and on the world’s second largest ice mass, and the world’s greatest fjord system, you utilise helicopters to access areas others never reach. So there are crystal clear waterfalls, snow-dappled mountains, hiking on ice, plenty of wildlife and alpine bliss. But also cultural connection and opportunity to see Greenland your way.

While the ship has capacity for 199 passengers, no two expeditions are the same and no two experiences are the same. Each day there are various options to tailor your experience, so it’s your idea of Greenland that comes to the fore.

There are three fixed departure dates for this cruise in July 2021, a month where more than 20 hours of daylight blurs into polar twilight and you have so much time to really explore.

Why can’t I see a price?

Cruise Southern Greenland in the Ultramarine

Denmark

The vistas reward whichever way you turn. Waterfalls flow upon verdant valleys. Dramatic peaks stand over icebergs and lush blue fjords. The great Greenland ice sheet extends before your eyes.  Southern Greenland is an adventurers paradise, a wilderness untouched where the only restriction is your own sense of expedition. Some call it the Arctic Patagonia, but South Greenland is far too unique a destination to be thought of as a replica.  Such an immense space requires time and flexibility. You will spend six days exploring South Greenland on the exceptional Ultramarine, the Arctic’s most advanced ship.  With helicopters, kayaks, zodiacs and mountain bikes, this vessel can take you to places visitors rarely ever get to venture. The itinerary is always flexible, based on ice and weather conditions. You will travel deep into the southern fjord systems, deep into the largest fjord system of them all.

Days 3 - 8 - Ultramarine Adventures in Southern Greenland

Enjoy the Arctic's widest variety of activities as you personalise the cruise to your interests.

Hiking on the icecap near Kangerlussuaq in Greenland

Heli-Hiking in Southern Greenland

Denmark

In Southern Greenland you can walk for many days without seeing another person. It’s wild and endless, the world’s largest fjord system stretching out in all directions. It’s a destination for highly experienced hikers, those who are self sufficient to hike for a month on end.  But...now there’s a new way to experience Southern Greenland on foot, without such advanced hiking skills and experience. The new Ultramarine ship has two onboard helicopters. On a multi-day Greenland cruise you can soar over the ice sheet by air and experience heli-hiking. This unique option makes remote Greenland hiking accessible to all skill levels. Exactly where you go will depend on the conditions, but in such wilderness there are always many different options. So walk, breathe in the crisp Arctic air, and immerse yourself in wondrous surroundings.

Fly Over & Land on the Greenland Ice Sheet

Denmark

A sheet of ice stretching three quarters of the way across Greenland. One of the world’s great mysteries and unfortunately one of the places undergoing greatest change. The Greenland Ice Sheet is disappearing but it still covers more than 1.5 million square kilometres. And in some places it’s over three kilometres thick! Fly over this epic expanse on a scenic helicopter flight. Crevasses and cracks scar the landscape. Here the colours flit from sparkling white to turquoise and then a darkened abyss. From the air you can track ridges and peaks, even polar bears on their journey. Then you will touch down and hear the crunch of ice beneath your feet. From the remote landing spot there is nothing but ice in all directions, a remarkable scene to remember so many years from now.  This scenic helicopter flight and landing is only possible as part of a multi-day Arctic cruise on the Ultramarine.

Camp in Tasermuit Fjord & Hike the Tundra

Denmark

From a cosy sleeping bag you look out across Greenland. Mighty peaks soar over alpine lakes and the only sound is the wind. You’ve just camped on the Tundra, in a place so remote you had to arrive by helicopter.  Tasermiut is one of Greenland’s most exclusive camps. Local guides help you explore local wonders here. You can walk pristine valleys and secluded landscapes, roam with a chef to forage for fresh ingredients, and admire the exquisite colour changes delivered by polar twilight.  There are no five-star hotels in such a remote place. Camping is part of the experience, a chance to fully connect and immerse yourself with this untouched natural paradise. It's more than comfortable and it's beyond glamping. This is a home for a night in a very faraway place. This Greenland camp and hike travel moment is only possible as part of a multi-day polar cruise on the Ultramarine.

Bathe in Hot Springs at Uunartoq

Denmark

On an uninhabited island dominated by titanic peaks you bathe in Arctic waters. It’s not cold. As icebergs drift by you let yourself drift under, into the waters of a remarkable outdoor spa.  Three springs trickle into a pool dammed by stone. The warming water soothes, as mountains and icebergs surround you. The air is icy and silent, yet your body remains warm and settled. Not many people get such an opportunity, to bathe in warm Arctic waters and let everything melt away, all around you. This travel moment is only possible as part of a multi-day cruise on the Ultramarine ship.

Tour Kujataa

Denmark

Norse ruins stand mysterious on the green valley. You can feel the history. A walk in Kujataa takes you back in time, to early Greenlandic farmer-hunters and sheep-farming settlements.  It is also a walk in the present, as you travel with a local guide and discover the subArctic farming landscape. Now a World Heritage Site, Kujataa consists of five different areas. It’s a showcase of archaeological sites and cultural histories, visited as part of a cruise on the Ultramarine ship.

Cruise Lindenow Fjord on a Zodiac

Denmark

Alpine melt creates waterfalls on sheer rock faces. Tidewater glaciers create otherworldly shapes and colours along the coastline. You’re in a small zodiac boat, cruising blissfully through Lindenow Fjord. One of the least explored fjords in Greenland, Lindenow is a great place to see wildlife on land, water and in the sky. The Ultramarine ship will dock and as part of your multi-day cruise itinerary you will explore this narrow arm of water.

Young man stands in the Glacier lagoon with his arms wide spread. Man wearing only swimming shorts. Ice bergs drifting in the lagoon. Cold temperatures for ice swimming. Calm surface of the water.

Polar Plunge in Arctic Waters

Denmark

A rite of passage, a once only plunge into the freezing waters of the Arctic. Yes, it’s cold, very very cold. But there is such inimitability to making this plunge, to experiencing the waters at the very north of our planet.  On the Ocean Adventurer you can jump safely into the bracing Arctic, a rejuvenating moment as you join the lucky few who have briefly swam so far north.

Heli Mountain Biking & Kayaking in South Greenland

Denmark

Isolated glacial lakes dot the mountains of South Greenland, epic stretches of blue unbeknown to the world. Up here there are no roads. There are no trails. But as every adventurer knows, you can always make your own trail.  A helicopter will take you to the upper alpine zones of South Greenland, from your base on the Ultramarine polar expedition ship. After the scenic flight you will cover new terrain, as you pioneer the raw splendour of these isolated landscapes.  Whether mountain biking or kayaking, this travel excursion requires prior experience and a good level of fitness. You will be deep in the wild and there’s such a thrill to discovering such uncharted territory.

Day 9 - Departure

Return to Reykjavik where you may wish to extend your journey by exploring parts of Iceland.
